The Missouri River Association of States and Tribes (MoRAST) conducted interviews on March 7, 2011 for the position of Executive Director to coordinate and manage the interests of the organization under the policy direction of the MoRAST Board of Directors. After an extensive application and interview process, the Board of Directors offered the position of Executive Director to former Kansas Governor Mike Hayden. After details are finalized, it is anticipated that he will begin his duties as Executive Director on July 1 when David Pope steps down from the position. Prior to that time, Mr. Hayden and Mr. Pope will work together to ensure a smooth transition of the administrative responsibilities of MoRAST. Mr. Hayden has served in many key positions and has extensive experience and a strong interest in water, natural resources and public policy issues due to his education and extensive background in a variety of positions during his distinguished career. These include serving as Kansas Governor, Legislator and Speaker of the House, Assistant Secretary of Interior for Fish, Wildlife and Parks, and Kansas Secretary of Wildlife and Parks, as well as former board member and Chairman of MoRAST. MoRAST serves as a forum for the identification, discussion, and resolution of issues related to the management of the natural resources of the Missouri River Basin including water resources, fish and wildlife, and consideration of the impacts to the economic, historical, cultural, and social resources among the member states, tribes, federal government and basin stakeholders.
